I understand that the name of this post may be a bit misleading - never fear - there is no need for a midwife for the Mathey family. "Call the Midwife" is the name of the BBC series I started watching recently on PBS. I have a love of all things "baby" and a love of all things "British" so it makes for smashing viewing!
This girl is my sad attempt at one of the main characters from the show - it is also my first attempt to draw someone who is real and not just straight from my imagination.
Me - "Corey, Do you think this looks like Jenny Lee
from Call the Midwife?"
Corey - "I guess so. . . (long dramatic pause)
What is Call the Midwife?"
Started with the basic silhouette and her lips - they always seem easier than the eyes!
I was trying to add some shadowing around the top of her nose but it made her look like she had a shadowy "unibrow" - not the look I was going for but in the end I was happy with how she turned out.
I will leave you with the angle I always love the most - upside down. My girls always seem to look better from this vantage point.

Very nice. Love her hair!
I think she's lovely upside down and right side up!
She looks great to me.
Sometimes drawing upside down can be helpful so I guess viewing upside down is good, too.
;D
You are so fun and it's always a great joy to read about your conversation between you and your sweet heart :))
I always end up with a great smile on my mouth :))
Your Jenny is absolutely gorgeous and the shadow between the eyes, on the top of the nose, came out so lovely and natural! :)
:))))
I just had to read to my boyriend (or call him my man) right now, what you asked your husband about, and what his answer was - after a dramatic pause.. ;) :D
Not being familiar with the BBC program, I'm afraid I would have had the same reaction of Cory! But I do like your portrait very much, especially the way you've done the shading on the face. I have so much trouble with noses, but yours is perfect.
Also love The Midwife especially the actress Miranda who plays the upper crust but accident prone midwife. The likeness to Jenny is very good, you should be pleased. Happy PPF, Annette x
She is great! I really love how the book page still shows through on her face. I got hooked on Doc Martin and Downton Abbey. Sounds like I need to look this one up. Beautiful work. Happy PPF
she turned out great! i love portraits on book pages -- the added layer give such mysterious depth to them!
I keep hearing good things about this series so I should make the time to watch... and love the painting this week... you have certainly captured the feel of that time in it ...xx
Doing the portraits on book pages makes them so special. You are so amazingly talented. I would take a portrait class with you!
I too really like the words of the book coming through your great portrait. It gives a real edge and makes the face really jump out at me.
I saw the show and loved it. I too like British TV . I don't remember the character well enough to know how close you got, but it's a well done portrait nonetheless less!
Very nice portrait, love how the text shows on her face, great effect! HPPF!
Michelle, i laughed at your last pic. Funny, when i saw that last pic, i thought, "hey! This looks kinda cool!!" ;-) I love that we can see the words through her face. Beautiful work Michelle... xox
I looked up the show, and yes, I think she does look like Jenny Lee.
Can't say anything about the like-ness because I don't know that show. But she looks great to me either way. Funny how you start with the lips. I usually leave them till last ...
Great portrait!
Love that the text is an integral part of her face. :)
♥♥♥
Happy PPF!!
