ICE STORM 2009!!!

Well - I am typing at my mom's house - we are without power for the 7th day in a row - the ice storm knocked the power box off our house last Tuesday night. We had ice on Tuesday but it was "warm and cuddly - pretty" ice! Then came the UGLY ice!! That night we watched/heard 100's of frozen branches and trees crash down in the neighborhood around us. We, fortunately, have a gas log fireplace in the family room and a gas stovetop and water heater so we are keeping clean and eating. The power is slowly turning on around us - our neighborhood is still dark! The boys started back to school today -
Back in September when we lost loads of shingles on our roof (Hurricane Ike) there were power outages for several days - 200 power poles were knocked down in that storm - THIS storm knocked down 2,000 poles! It will be some time before everything is back to normal - 19,000 of the 26,000 customers of OMU were out of power at one time!
Gotta dash - can't tell you how nice it was to feel a keyboard under my fingers (even if for just a few minutes)!!

I headed your way today to attend a family funeral (not storm related). Mom and Dad broke down and purchased a generator on Saturday, but they still don't have power. One of my relatives works closely with OMU and he told part of the electrical grid that was hit would be easier to rebuild than to repair! Mom and Dad live out in the county and they said the complete and total darkness was eerie. Power has been restored to several places near them, so they are hopeful they will be soon. However, Mom said she is very thankful they still have a home, clothes, etc. Take care and stay warm1!! I hope you get your power back soon!

Hi Michelle - came across your blog today on the A Muse website- as it happens I'm in Louisville. I was lucky enough to be without power for only 5 days - hope you didn't have to brave the single digit temps last night w/o power! Hang in there... let's just hope that "third time is NOT a charm" in KY" cuz' I shudder to think what else could come our way! Don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to the temps in the 60's this weekend! All the best to you and your family!
