Angsty self portrait

"She was suffering from a lack of frivolity."
                               - Michelle Mathey
This week's theme at Illustration Friday is VANITY.  I ask you - what could be more vain than a quote and self portrait of myself in all my angsty glory?
Life has been so busy lately that whenever I finally sit for a minute to draw or paint all that seems to come out is cranky stuff.  Today is my day off so I've started it out right by having Chocolate Cherry Cake for breakfast.  Maybe cheerful pics fueled by chocolate will come out of me today. . . only time will tell.

I love this so much because her expression is so very distressed, so real. you've captured the feeling of how you were feeling. And I think it's great you started the day with cake!!

I totally love the composition of your self-portrait! Although I can understand why it could be seen as vain, I believe that self-portraits help artists cope with issues in our lives - self therapy if you may. Blessings and Happy PPF! #69

I really do like these pages. She has such a wonderful expression. A self portrait is difficult. We see ourselves so differently than others do. Well done

Very compelling pages and I love the look of the portrait's eyes. I think it's great to illustrate your own quote -- we need frivolity, and occasionally cake for breakfast. Thanks for sharing your wonderful work.

Oh man. Starting the day with cake is THE BEST. I think self-portraits are fascinating exercises and not necessarily vain in the least. The expression you gave yourself is fantastic!

You are always great with compositions. Love how you used half of her face the other way around. And the addition of the map is great too.

You are way too hard on yourself!! Except for the cake of course!! I think your self portrait looks a bit timid and apprehensive....but not cranky at all! I love your work...and this is no exception. I agree with Denthe, great composition! Wonderful quote too! Stand proud...because you are truly a fabulous artist and that's a beautiful self portrait!!!

I have to agree with all of the others:

1. Chocolate cake in the morning is a wonderful idea...you can wear it off throughout the day and be inspired by the deliciousness of it!

2. Self-portraits are good for practising techniques and visiting one's soul.

3. Vainness is hardly your issue here! Artists for centuries have been doing self-portraits, sometimes because they couldn't afford to pay models, other times they were in seclusion and had no one else to draw. I say, "If you've got the talent, and the desire, go for it!

4. You did capture how you have been feeling, and that will help you to change and reflect, so there is nothing wrong with your self-portrait!

Thanks for being brave to share!

1. I want chocolate cake.
I love the map as background and the portrait expression is great! And I think it's totally part of the process to draw cranky from time to time. You've conquered!
