29 Faces (Day 13) - Fall Girl

Fall is almost here!  I love fall colors and cooler air - it is so nice to wake up in the morning and the temp is in the 60's - whoo hoo!!  The quote is from F. Scott Fitzgerald.  A girl with a ponytail seemed like a good idea but something isn't quite right about her. . .
This girl is definitely an "upside down" kinda girl.  I think she looks super cute upside down - her nose/eyes looks better from this angle.  In fact, that is the way I like to look at pictures of myself but with one added step.  I am an "upside down from a distance" kinda girl.  I usually look pretty good when I hold a picture of myself at arm's length upside down while I am squinting my eyes.
I also like her cropped down tight.  She's colored with pencils and I need lots more practice trying to shade and make smooth skin color.

29 Faces (Day 12) - Tina Berning inspired face

Today's face is inspired by the work of Tina Berning, an amazing Berlin based artist and illustrator.  LOVE how edgy and free her girls are!  I've ordered her book 100 Girls on Cheap Paper and am eagerly awaiting its arrival - in the meantime I wanted to try my own interpretation.

29 Faces (Day 11) - Collage Girl

"The girl liked to imagine that she is a beauty."
She has Adele's nose and one of Katie Holmes' eyes - how could she not be a beauty?  Often I've heard a person say if she had different features that she would be happier about her appearance.  If that was the case would that individual still be that individual or a different person altogether?
I've never done a collage face before - took longer to put together than I anticipated, but it was fun cutting up faces and trying different parts out together.  This face is also for the Illustration Friday Challenge - IMAGINATION.

29 Faces (Day 10) - Acrylic Paint Girl

This girl was painted directly onto a background that I had made some time back.  For fun I had squirted some acrylic paint onto my paper and then moved/scraped it around with an old credit card.  The colors were kept separate but still mingled in an fun way.  Digging in my stash of partly finished projects has been very helpful in making a face everyday.  No time for painting backgrounds and then faces on top -
I had intended for the background to show through more in her skin but there saw a big smear of turquoise the made her look kinda sickly and that would never do!!  You can see purple peeking through on her neck though.
This particular girl is my husband's favorite.  When asked why he replied,  "She is very attractive - has pretty hair, pretty eyes, pretty lips.  She looks like a Scandinavian Princess."  Corey is always very descriptive with his commentary - hee hee.

29 Faces (Day 9) - Manga Girl

So today Caleb and I did some drawing together and he suggested that we try Manga.  I've been attempting different styles this month but I don't think that I would've ever thought to try Manga without his prompting.  We watched a YouTube video and had a blast drawing (there seems to be a video for EVERYTHING under the sun on YouTube)!
This is definitely a beginner's attempt but it was super fun!!  Japanese Washi Tape is the perfect finish to a Japanese style of drawing!
Be sure and check out all the faces at Ayala Art!

29 Faces (Day 8) - Styrofoam Girl Revisited

Remember Styrofoam Girl?  White/kraft is her daytime look.  This is her evening ensemble for a formal affair.  White and black are so striking - maybe a little off-putting in a face but still a memorable look.  Place pieces of of black and white cardstock adjacent to each other and stamp with VersaMark ink.  Emboss the black piece with white embossing powder and the white piece with black powder.  This is a look that I learned way back in 2006 during my cardmaking days - check out these gorgeous butterfly cards.
There is loads of fun to be had making faces in September!  Join in on the fun at Ayala Art or at least go and check out all the amazing work!

29 Faces (Day 7) - Pencil Girl

Pencil gal is not a big fan of exercise as evidenced by her quote!  hee hee
Sketched with pencil and then layered onto a teabag she is embellished with leftover saved pieces from a past project.  Save those small pieces - you never know when they are just the little boost you need to finish a page.
When I look closely at her I see lots things that I would change or tweak but then I realize how far I've come since late last year when I first started drawing faces.   My progress - slow but steady.
