29 Faces - Day 11 "NUISANCE"

"NUISANCE"

Just got my first set of pastels (the chalky kind) - I've had some oil pastels for a while now and have used them a few times but I'm loving these chalky ones much more!!  Much neater when you don't feel like using paint.
The problem with me having never taken art (other than online classes) is that I don't know what to call things (like chalky pastels) or really how to use them unless I've seen a video.  I've been smudging the pastels with my fingers and smaller areas with a q-tip or dry paintbrush.  If you have any tips please let me know!!  I've sealing with Workable Fixative.

oh, nice and soft-looking! Love it! I don't know how to use them either. Whenever I do (which is not very often ...), I use them as I use pencils, meaning smudging with a paper towel (I used to use my fingers too but read somewhere you better not do that because of the oil in your skin), and with a q-tip and with those paper stumps (don't know the word for that either ....)

Gorgeous -- love your signature dots too! Sometimes I think it's better not to know the "right" way to use something...

i took several college drawing classes...we always used our fingers for pastels. this was using stick pastels though. if you are using the new pan pastels, i'm not sure about those.

either way, whatever you're doing must be right! she looks amazing.

I like this face...she looks so sweet and innocent. She'd never be a nuisance!

I'll be checking back to see the comments here as I'm very new using the chalk pastels, too. But I love how they blend so easily.

I like way you used the pastels to show the forms of the face -so soft and subtle. I like the text at the side and I always like your dots! You have reminded me about my big box of pastels that haven't been touched for years! Maybe now is the time......
Thank you for taking part in Mandarin Orange Monday:)

oh my dear Michelle... you sound like you're doing JUST FINE on your own. :-) The "chalky pastels" are usually referred to as dry pastels. At least here in Canada. As for technique, i think you're doing all the right things. Your portraits are really becoming beautiful. I use the same things - fingers, Q tips, paper towel - whatever i have near me. Beautiful work girl. xox

Michelle, you have done an outstanding job with the dry pastels. Your portrait is gorgeous. (I did a face too). I have used pastels in the past and really enjoyed getting my fingers into my work. Some people leave the rough lines and marks, but I always smoothed it out with fingers.

This is very striking! I love how you used a unique color palette and you seem to know what you are doing with the pastels, the painting is very good. Sometimes we just need to use the products and come up with our own way of using them.
